A symbolic turtle adapted from a Mimbres design. Many Native American Indians believe that many years ago everything was covered by water and that the world came to be formed on the back of a turtle. They call the world "Great Turtle." When you honor the turtle you are treating the earth with respect. When you do not take care of the earth you are hurting the turtle. This hot plate is handmade from eathenware clay with a cork backing to provide an extra layer of insulation so it can be safely used on your table.
The creation of the tile begins with the the design modelled in wet clay. The original is used to create a plaster cast destroying the model. Earthenware clay is rolled to an even thickness and the plaster cast impresses the design into the clay. When completely dry, the tile is bisque fired to 2000°. After firing, the underglaze colors are hand painted on the tile, it is overglazed and then fired a second time to 1940°.
Because the colors are under a layer of clear glaze, you can enjoy this hotplate everyday and the design won’t wear or fade. The hotplate can easily be cleaned with any glass cleaner, or soap and water. I do not recommend immersing the hotplate in water because of the cork backing.
