Rabbits look so pretty everywhere but the garden! The inspiration for this design comes from a Mimbres bowl. Rabbits are common symbols of the moon in both Southwest and Central America cultures. This hot plate is handmade from earthenware clay with a cork backing to provide an extra layer of insulation so it can be safely used on your table.
The creation of the tile begins with the finished design, in reverse, drawn on a square of freshly made plaster. The relief design is cut into the plaster with dental tools. Wet clay is rolled to a uniform thickness, which is then pressed into the plaster design and the edges are trimmed. When completely dry, the tile is bisque fired to 2000°. After firing, the underglaze colors are hand painted on the tile, it is overglazed and then fired a second time to 1940°.
Because the colors are under a layer of clear glaze, you can enjoy this hotplate everyday and the design won’t wear or fade. The hotplate can easily be cleaned with any glass cleaner, or soap and water. I do not recommend immersing the hotplate in water because of the cork backing.
