Jaguar Tile Clock
Price: $65.00
Shipping: $9.50
9 ¼” square x 1”
Tile is 6 ¾” square The jaguar design is an adaptation of a carving found at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan dated to 900-1200 CE. In Mesoamerica, the jaguar was considered a symbol of strength, divinity and general domain over all things. The figures of eagles and jaguars devouring hearts are said to represent the warriors who were responsible for obtaining victims for sacrifice to the gods. (You dont have to tell your guests what the jaguar is holding.)
The creation of the tile begins with the finished design, in reverse, drawn on a
square of freshly made plaster. The relief design is cut into the plaster with
dental tools. Wet clay is rolled to a uniform thickness, which is then pressed
into the plaster design, a hole is made in the center of the tile for the clock
mechanism and the edges are trimmed. When completely dry, the tile is bisque
fired to 2000°. After firing, the six underglaze colors are hand painted on the
tile, it is overglazed and then fired a second time to 1940°.
The solid wood backing is stained and a hole is cut in the center so the clock
mechanism will be flush with the back of the clock and a metal hanger bar
attached for hanging. The clocks use one AA battery (included) which lasts about
a year.
