The fish leaping on the tile clock face is adapted from a Mimbres pot design. Fish comprise about 8% of the figurative depictions on Mimbres pottery. Comparisons of fish imagery indicate that many species represented are saltwater fish from the Gulf of California, over 500 kilometers away from the Southwestern region which was home to the Mimbres. The 8 ¾” relief tile is handmade from earthenware clay and underglaze colors are used to highlight the stylized scales and rippling water.
The creation of the tile begins with the finished design, in reverse, drawn on a square of freshly made plaster. The relief design is cut into the plaster with dental tools. Wet clay is rolled to a uniform thickness, which is then pressed into the plaster design, a hole is made in the center of the tile for the clock mechanism and the edges are trimmed. When completely dry, the tile is bisque fired to 2000°. After firing, the underglaze colors are hand painted on the tile, it is overglazed and then fired a second time to 1940°.
The solid wood backing is stained, then painted in colors to complement the underglaze colors of the tile. Acrylic paints are used and multiple colors are sponge painted to give a marbled effect. A hole is cut in the center so the clock mechanism will be flush with the back of the clock and a metal hanger bar attached for hanging. The clocks use one AA battery (included) which lasts about a year.
