The dog tile is inspired by a pre-Columbian stamp from Veracruz, Mexico. Flat stamps were usually made from clay and used to decorate pottery.
Dogs were abundant in pre-Hispanic times and represent 20% of the remains found in archaeological sites. The dog was both a hunting partner and a source of food. In the Aztec calendar the dog appears as the 10th sign of the days, and its regent god was Mictlantecutli, Lord of the Dead. In other cases it was associated with agriculture and rain.

Jaguar

The jaguar image on the tile was adapted from a spindle whorl from pre-Columbian Mexico. Spindle whorls were round with a center hole and often made from fired clay.
For obvious reasons all Mesoamerican cultures featured a jaguar god, beginning with the Olmec in the Veracruz region of Mexico. As the largest of the big cats in the Americas the jaguar is quick, agile, powerful, and an aggressive predator that can hunt in both trees and the water.
The jaguar was thought to possess the ability to move between worlds because of its comfort both in trees and water, the ability to hunt equally well in the nighttime as the daytime, and the habit of sleeping in caves, places often associated with the deceased ancestors.

| A turtle tile adapted from a Mimbres design. Many Native American Indians believe that many years ago everything was covered by water and that the world came to be formed on the back of a turtle. They call the world "Great Turtle." When you honor the turtle you are treating the earth with respect. When you do not take care of the earth you are hurting the turtle. |
