Bear Handmade Ceramic Tile Mirror

15 ¾” x 9 ¾” x 1 ¼”
Individual tiles in mirror are 3” x 9 ¾”
The well known Southwestern symbol of the bear represents courage, strength,
protection and life. The natural terra-cotta color of the clay used in the tiles
accents the glaze colors of black, red, turquoise and deep orange. The four
rectangular tiles in the mirror are individually hand pressed from terra-cotta
clay and fired twice to achieve the distinctive sculptural effect.
The process begins with an original tile that is sculpted in clay. A plaster
mold is created from the original, destroying it and the resulting mold is then
used to create additional tiles. Wet clay is hand pressed into the plaster mold
and knocked out when the clay begins to dry. After drying completely, it is
bisque fired to 2000°. It is then glazed and fired again to 1940°.
The backing of the mirror is stained plywood with eye hooks and picture wire
which allows it to be hung easily. Because of the weight of the mirror, I do
recommend using a toggle bolt to hang if not securing it to a stud.
